7/27/2023 0 Comments Nasa stock graphThis includes what happened during those projects, the lessons learned from any mistakes or successes, and what actions were taken. One of the first thing our young engineers are taught is to go to the Lessons Learned database for information about different past projects. I’m going to share a story about why I built this application for my engineers. If you build applications that are not useful to your end users, those applications are going to die. You could have all the information in the world, but if you can’t convert that into actionable knowledge, you really don’t have anything.Īs Voltaire said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” You have to use that power to transport information into actionable knowledge for your end users and to give them something they can actually work with so they come back. I’m going to play with semantics a bit and say that information is not the power, but knowledge is power. Why is ubiquitous information so profound? It’s a tremendous equalizer. Why is this important? Former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, said “We have an opportunity for everyone in the world to have access to all the world’s information. All of this together allows the organization to speak the same language across silos and share information so the company can move forward. Knowledge architecture is really a group of individuals within an organization that can serve as knowledge management liaisons for strategy, informatics, architecture and data science. The Power of Transforming Data into Knowledge The taxonomist was talking about the metadata of the documents - the title, who created it, when it was created - while the developer was talking about the metadata of the database itself. While they both agreed on the definition of metadata, they were really talking about two different things. The taxonomist wanted to see the metadata but the developer resisted, so the taxonomist explained that access to metadata helps review the taxonomy for classification purposes, while the developer explained that they already had metadata storage covered. The first thing I did was interview people and attend meetings, and at one of those meetings between a taxonomist and an IT developer, we were discussing how to improve search through taxonomy - a discussion the two had had many times before. I first started at NASA about five years ago with the task of examining knowledge management within the organization. It’s important not to try and fit your data into a visualization let your data drive how you visualize the information.īelow is a quick summary slide of what I just went over: When you combine the three, you end up with what I call data-driven visualization. Knowledge management is used for strategy, informatics provides the pipeline to create storage capabilities with applications to transmit data from where it’s stored to end users, and data science provides the algorithms and methodologies that allow you to convert that data into actionable knowledge for your end users. To convert data to knowledge, a convergence of knowledge management, informatics and data science is necessary. We have to try to break down those silos, which is exactly the capability that graph databases provide. And this volume of data keeps growing in terms of variety, velocity, volume, value and veracity.īut our biggest challenge is the accessibility of this information due to the silos between departments and also within our individual groups, products and programs. This data includes hundreds of millions of documents, reports, project data, lessons learned, scientific research, medical analysis and more stored in a nationwide database. How do we do that?įirst let’s go over some of the challenges your organization will likely have to overcome.Īt NASA we have around 18 to 20 different locations with a total of 80,000 employees, and have been collecting data since the late 1950s/early 1960s. This makes it more important than ever to increase the productivity of our knowledge worker. By the time I finish this presentation, I hope you’ll see why knowledge architecture is important and have a framework for taking it back to your organizations - managers, investors and funders - and show them how this can implemented within your organization.īack in 1999, Peter Drucker said, “The most important contribution management needs to make in the 21st century is to increase the productivity of knowledge work in the knowledge worker.” Since that time social media has exploded, the Internet of Things (IoT) has taken off and we constantly have more and more data available. Knowledge architecture combines the different disciplines of knowledge management, informatics, and data science, which we use to extract knowledge from our “ Lessons Learned” database.

What to Consider When Choosing Bed Railsīefore choosing bed rails, evaluate the health conditions of the person who will be using them to determine whether bed rails are appropriate. If you’re a caregiver, know that bed rails shouldn’t be used as a substitute for proper monitoring. A concave mattress can also reduce the risk of rolling off the bed. When bed rails aren’t appropriate, consider alternative measures for a safer and more secure environment, such as roll guards, foam bumpers or lowering the bed and placing a foam mat on the floor in case of falls. Other conditions that may put users at higher risk include confusion, lack of muscle control and restlessness. For example, people who are cognitively impaired from taking certain medications or have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia are at greater risk of entrapment and falling when using bed rails. The Forbes Health editorial team is independent and objective. And most of all, it brought home to me just how critical trust and openness has to be in our use of technology in education. The contrast between the two presentations couldn’t have been more stark, and both demonstrated in quite different ways, why it is so important to engage children and learners in their own education, why we need to listen to them, not eavesdrop on them, and why we need to respect their privacy and consent. Seriously? I asked again if clients really had to submit an FOI request to access their own data and the presenter replied that they could just e-mail their sales representative for access. The reply was that the data is stored on servers in the UK and clients have the right to access this data under the Freedom of Information act. I made a point of asking during questions who owned and had access to the data that Lightspeed gathers. Apparently they’ve had, and I quote, “Lots of positive feedback about teachers taking control of and locking apps on students’ mobile devices.” That was the point where my jaw really hit the floor. Orchestrator allows teachers to view all students screens from a dashboard, “ensures safety by seeing who is protected by the webfilter and who isn’t”, and perhaps most worryingly, “record sessions to store a students activity to share or investigate.” This immediately rang all sorts of alarm bells where is that data being stored, who owns it, who has access to it? Although Lightspeed’s products are primarily designed for use on schools’ own mobile devices, the presenter added that they can also be installed on children’s own mobile devices and can be used to monitor their web activity outwith school hours. One of their products, Classroom Orchestrator, is designed to allow teachers to monitor students screens and devices “making it easy to see who’s off-task, who needs extra attention, and who’s excelling”. There doesn’t seem to be any mention of trivial issues such as privacy, ethics and consent. I presume in this instance “the detail” means individual students.Īccording to their press, Lightspeed Systems create tools to help schools manage and filter their networks as well as empower classroom learning. As well as just blocking content, Lightspeed’s Web Filter also incorporates hierarchical filtering “to keep students safe, even when they leave the classroom,” along with web activity reporting functionality “from the high level to the detail”. Their honesty, enthusiasm and willingness to share was in stark contrast to the previous presenters and event sponsors Lightspeed Systems who presented their “online safety and web filtering systems” for education. Inspirational has become a rather throwaway term used to describe speakers, but these young people really, truly, were an inspiration. Stephen and Rebecca stood up in front of an audience of over a hundred delegates and spoke confidently and articulately about the importance of the Digital Leaders initiative and how much they enjoyed and benefitted from being part of it. GitX is an interesting and innovative Google Chrome extension that aims to change that by providing GitHub users with the ability to add private notes, comments, ideas in the Issues and pull requests pages. Please note that these notes are only visible to specific project collaborators. In short, it helps the actual people who are in charge of the project (the actual maintainers) to the community a lot more efficiently directly within GitHub itself. It keeps all internal discussions about the project on the platform it is hosted (GitHub). This should help speed up the process greatly, especially in the case of simple tasks. Getting started with GitX could not have been easier. For starters, you’ll need a valid GitHub account. Next, head over to the Chrome Web Store and install the GitX extension on your browser. Once installed, the extension will require authorization which means that you will have to log in to your GitHub account and provide the tool with access to your public and private repositories, as well as your GitHub-related personal user data. Go to the GitHub Issues/Pull Requests tab, and you’ll be able to see a new “Make a note” field at the bottom of the page.Įvery note can be saved and tweaked later on at any time. In addition, the extension provides you with the option of showing and hiding the notes to other collaborators. Needless to say, only users with full write access to your repositories can create the said notes. Taking everything into account, GitX is undoubtedly a very interesting proposition. While not perfect, it does improve GitHub’s productivity set of features, making it quite valuable for users who often work on projects with multiple other collaborators.GitX is a git GUI specifically for Mac OS X. While there plenty of USB-C to HDMI cables to choose from (Apple even sells their own USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter), almost all of them are unidirectional (meaning they can send data in only one direction.) That means that a USB-C to HDMI is NOT the same as an HDMI to USB-C cable, which is what I needed for the LG display. Here’s where things get tricky: you cannot use a standard USB-C to HDMI cable. That means if you buy your computer and monitors from Apple, you have to convert the HDMI source from the M1 Mac Mini to USB-C before you can use two displays. I find a little strange, since Apple doesn’t currently sell an HDMI monitor. So while I could hook one up via USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, the other one had to be connected via HDMI. The problem with the LG Ultrafine monitors is that they are both USB-C. Just hook up your second monitor using a standard HDMI cable and you’re done. If you have an HDMI monitor you want to hook up to your M1 Mac Mini, that’s pretty straightforward. One (and only one) connected via Thunderbolt 4.The M1 Mac Mini does support TWO displays, but in a very specific configuration: In fact, the M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro can only natively support ONE external monitor. There is one “gotcha” though: it can be much harder to use multiple monitors with an M1 Mac.īefore getting the M1 Mac Mini, I was using my 16” Intel MacBook Pro as my main monitor on a stand in the middle with two LG 4k Ultrafine monitors, one on each side:īut that’s impossible with M1 Macs at the moment. It’s incredible how much computer you get for the price. It’s amazing to me that a $700 desktop has replaced my $3000 laptop, but it has. TL DR – The M1 Mac Mini is a screaming’ machine. I wanted to see if all the hype was real, and I really liked the idea of a regular desk setup that never changed. So right before Christmas break, I got an M1 Mac Mini. I also have heard a lot of great things about the new M1 Macs. This allowed me to unplug my laptop and bring it with me when I wanted to work from a coffee shop or needed to travel.Īnd now that I work from home every single day, I don’t really need a portable computer anymore. I’ve had a MacBook Pro ever since my first 17” titanium model, and had been using my current generation 16” MacBook Pro and a Thunderbolt 3 dock. The Siig adapter mentioned here will ONLY work with a USB-C monitor. Some readers have reported that the newer model (24MD4KB) does not work with the mentioned adapter because it requires Thunderbolt 3 instead of USB-C. Editor’s Note: The LG 4k monitors used for this article are model number 22MD4KA. 7/26/2023 0 Comments Drive garbage truckIn addition to the technical requirements, there are some personal attributes that are helpful for garbage truck driver jobs.
